Spring Season To Dos…
In Mid April, you will see new leaves or flowers sprouting on all perennial plants. Now is the time to start cleaning around the plants. In the fall or autumn season I let the plants hibernate meaning I do not cut down the stems after the leaves fall. Cutting those stems might expose them to the freezing nights. Lets start with spring season:
- Cut dead stems, clear weeds and dead leaves
- Add Fertilizer (NPK) or Bonemeal around each plant:
- Time for Outdoor seeding cold weather plants
- Time for Indoor Seed starting
Step 1:
Raised bed in Mid- April after a rain shower. Weeds in and around the raised bed. Garlic plant on the left (planted in late Sept.). Garlic was planted in the fall season and it was hibernating until March. Once the snow cleared and the soil warmed up garlic started sprouting. Sage plant on the other side waking from the lumber.

Late March/ Early April:
- Chive / Spring Onion has green leaves.
- Lemon Thyme
- Mint / Pudina sprouting between dead stems
- Green bin with weeds. In May it will be planted with Green Beans or Pumpkin seeds.

This place is ready for Cold weather plants like Green Peas and Coriander.
In the back Garlic Plant is growing. I planted it garlic in Fall (Sep/Oct) and it started sprouting in March.

Add fertilizer:

Adding egg shells will keep slugs away and to add calcium to the soil. Any NPK fertilizer will work. I added some Bonemeal around the established plants like Garlic, Chive , Sage and other perennials in my bed.

Chive is western version of Scallion/Spring Onions. It is a perennial and comes back every year with a beautiful chive blossom.
