Prepping the Garden for Spring

Spring is from late March to late June – No more snow only rain, colorful flowers and leaves. In late March to mid April, you will see new leaves or flowers sprouting  on all perennial plants. Some trees and plants like Rhododendrons have flowers sprout first before the leaves. This is the first sign of spring. In April, there is a lot of rain and we hope we don’t get any more snow. Winter is over and by March we are tired of the snow. It was beautiful in winter but now spring is here – green leaves, flowers and good rain is all you need.

Preparing for spring really starts in the month of October – Fall/Autumn. Time to plant Garlic cloves which will be ready in late June. There will be lots of dead leaves on the ground, which will become the compost nourishing the plants for Spring. I like to bury some dry leaves and kitchen food scrap waste in my raised bed which will turn into compost.

April showers bring May Flowers! In Mid April, you will see new leaves or flowers sprouting  on all perennial plants. This is when I like to start spring clearing – around the garden plants of dead stems and leaves. It is very cold in March and April, so I wait until mid April for a sunny day to spend some time in my garden…

In the month of May, all the Plants in my Garden are fully grown and needs to be harvested regularly to continue to produce more leaves and fruits.
